Graduate Student ,TA, Intern, and Mainframe Learner Building Enterprise Skills

👋About Me and My Current Role:

Name:

Johannas Katikala

Location:

Dallas,Texas

Primary Mainframe Focus:

Graduate data science student exploring IBM Z and mainframe, with a focus on how enterprise systems run at scale and how analytics can help make them faster, safer, and smarter.

Amount of time in the Mainframe Space as of writing:

About 6 months actively exploring the mainframe ecosystem through IBM Z Xplore, learning core concepts and gaining hands on experience with tools like Zowe while building my foundation in enterprise computing.

🚀My Path to the Mainframe:

  • Before the Mainframe: My background? I am a master’s student in Data Science at the University of North Texas, with a strong interest in how large scale systems handle real world workloads. My work and projects have been centered on analytics, databases, and applied engineering, which naturally made me curious about the platforms behind mission critical operations. I have always liked learning tools that are practical, structured, and used in industry, so mainframes felt like a great fit.

  • The Turning Point: What was the moment or reason you decided to pursue a career in mainframe technology? My turning point was attending a mainframe conference, and honestly, it was a surprise in the best way. I walked in thinking I would just “learn something new,” and walked out thinking, this is actually exciting. I learned how much of the world still relies on IBM Z for mission critical work in banking, healthcare, and enterprise systems, and how much innovation is still happening in that space. That event made mainframes feel less like “old tech” and more like the quiet powerhouse of modern computing, and I wanted in.

  • Key Learning Resources: The most valuable courses, programs, or certifications that helped you get started: IBM Z Xplore has been my go to starting point, especially because the challenges make learning feel like progress instead of pressure. It has also been where I started working with Zowe, which made the whole experience feel more modern and approachable through a CLI workflow. I have been connecting what I learn there with my data science and database background, so I can understand not just how things run on IBM Z, but why it matters in real enterprise environments.

💼 A Day in the Life

Bringing your role to life

  • What is the core problem you solve for your company? I currently work as a Teaching Assistant at UNT and as an intern with the City of Lewisville. At UNT, I help students understand technical concepts, troubleshoot coding issues, and complete assignments successfully. In my internship, I work with data and operational information to support analysis and improve decision making. Alongside both roles, I am building my mainframe skills to better understand how large enterprise systems support real world operations.

  • What are the top 3 technologies or tools you use every day?

  • Microsoft Teams for communication and collaboration. Python and SQL for data analysis, troubleshooting, and learning activities. IBM Z Xplore and Zowe as I continue developing hands on mainframe skills.

  • What is the most interesting or rewarding part of your job? The most rewarding part is seeing progress happen in real time. As a TA, it is when a student goes from confused to “ohhh I get it” and their code finally runs. As an intern, it is when the data actually tells a clear story and helps someone make a better decision. And on the mainframe side, it is that feeling when a tool like Zowe makes something click and you realize you are slowly getting comfortable with systems that run at a huge scale.

💡 Advice for Aspiring Mainframers

  • What is one key skill (technical or soft) you wish you had learned sooner? I wish I learned earlier how to be comfortable asking questions and using documentation the right way. In the beginning I felt like I had to understand everything before trying, but mainframe learning goes much faster when you try, get stuck, look it up, and ask good questions. That habit saves a lot of time.

  • What is your top piece of advice for a student or professional trying to break into the industry? Do not wait until you feel “ready.” Start small and stay consistent. IBM Z Xplore is a great place to begin, and tools like Zowe make practice feel more modern and approachable. Also talk to people in the space, conferences and community events really help you understand what roles look like in real life.

  • Where do you see the most exciting growth or opportunity in the mainframe space right now? I think the biggest opportunity is in making mainframe work more accessible and connected to modern development, like using Zowe, automation, and integrating mainframe workflows with cloud and DevOps tools. It feels like the bridge between strong legacy systems and modern engineering is getting stronger, and that is where a lot of exciting work is happening.

That's my journey as of 2/19/2026, thanks for listening!
